Conference 2014

Annual Conference in Telford

Have purple Boa will travel…..This was my third conference and when I got ready ,  I was a little apprehensive about getting the voting right …..

The ladies from Kettering Club had helped sort out my accommodation and the coach travel…and looked after me…

We had three good days at Telford…..We were lucky with our accommodation at the University , which was comfortable with very good breakfasts and evening meals if required….

The Celebration of Service and Friendship was memorable with the Salvation Army Band playing  enthusiastically whilst we assembled.

Val Pascoe, D129 Chairman confidently led the service and the strong theme was Friendship and no-one could fail to feel the wave of love and companionship when one soloist from the beautifully turned out St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School Choir slightly lost his words, and only just managed to get through his piece. We all shed a tear as his classmates put their arms around him!

Their songs were of Friendship, Trust, Understanding, Peace and Do not be Afraid.

The Welcome from the Mayor of Telford and Wrekin was sincere and he spoke of Friendship.

Greetings from the President of International Inner Wheel – Gabriella Adami Gabriella reminded us that we are a large, prestigious organisation but it is imperative for us to keep expanding.

Inner Wheel is an organisation that has pride and ambition and must enjoy working to the rules.   She ended her address by repeating her motto of ‘We, for Women’ and saying that is an on-going work in progress and we must work together for its growth in the world.

Nan McCreadie is the first lady to become President of Rotary International in GB&I, but she is also proud to be a member of Inner Wheel.

She said that when we decide to become a Rotarian or an Inner Wheel member, we engage to change the lives of others.   In fact, what happens is that we change our lives as well.  By getting involved with what our organisations do, it affects us all and changes the way we think and act.

We heard speakers Mark Waddington – Hope & Homes, Jan Leeming’s Memory Box,

and were entertained by Judith Hibbert -Music & Mirth’ and the 1-2-1 Soul Band

One of the highlights of the Conference was the  presentation of the fully equipped Brainwave vehicle featuring our Association Logo.  Past Association President Sheila Halliday- Pegg’s charity for 2012/13 was  Brainwave, so she was very pleased to hand over the keys, naming it “Sheila's Wheeler”, ‘thanks to a bottle of mineral water,’ to give many happy years of service to Brainwave. Another memorable moment was the arrival of Assciation Chairman Gill on a trike and Zena's arrival onto the stage with items of lost property for Gill.

The AGM was well run and we moved swiftly through the business….It was lovely to hear Sheila speak as she had been so poorly…and it was not certain she would be attending Telford. Sheila  and Association President Gill Rowley  presented incoming Association Chairman Thelma Pacsoo with her chain office.

Monty Don was an excellent speaker and enjoyable …Then we had the Introduction of Association Officers for 2014-15 and Adornment of Thelma Pacsoo

The Gala dinner at the Telford International Centre was amazing….  As we entered the dining room, which incidentally was decorated with hundreds of silver and black balloons, many people were already dancing to the strains of music of the 1920’s, being played by Duke Valentine’s Rhythm Kings.

The ladies had really taken on the fashion of the era, and purple definitely seemed to be the season’s colour of choice, The men too, not to be outdone, came as spivs, gangsters or looked dashing in their D.J’s. There were 1,700 plus guests attending.  The band struck up once more; many enjoying the dancing or, as President Gill did, meandering around the tables, taking a last opportunity to chat before heading off the next day, at the conclusion of yet another very successful Conference.

Until you meet up again in Bournemouth next April, may we keep our wheel turning!

Jackie Brame - District Chairman 2013-14
