Nottingham 2017

Monday 3rd April- There hasn't been a Conference so close to District 7 before and therefore we anticpated that many  D7 members would attend even if only for the day and it  was wonderful to see so many members from District 7 wearing their allotted sunflower corsage on Monday afternoon as they registered. Many ladies gave a helping hand to get Association President Zena's tombola stall ready and how wonderful it looked with  hundreds of gifts and prizes wrapped in yellow.

The evening "Get Together " with District 11 was an evening of friendship and puzzlement as we tried to guess what DC Dorothy had  placed into the 50 socks !!  Nuts, bolts, badges, pins and a mobile phone were just some  items to guess.

Tuesday 4th April- The Royal Concert was soon buzzing with excitement as ladies and some gentlement arrived. One gentleman in particular caused a little excitement, well we were in Nottingham !!  The visiting ladies from Nigeria  were probably wondering what all the fuss was about. Over 2000 ladies had registered for conference so it was almost full to capacity in the Royal Concert Hall.

The Conference began with the usual service of friendsip which was made all the more special as the District 7 Choir, conducted by Gillian Bindley,  began with  a performance of  "Wonderful World" and then accompanied the hymns as we sang. This year the collection during the service was for Canine Partners.

The Conference Session began with a welcome from the Sheriff of Nottingham, Jackie Morris, yes a lady Sheriff. We then heard International Inner Wheel President  Oluyemisi Alatise speak of her  love of Inner Wheel. This year's President of Rotary International in GB&I was another lady, Eve Conway, who told of the wonderful work Rotary has done in it's efforts to erradicate Polio.

The first Charity presentation was  to B-eat, Association President Zena's chosen charity. Andrew Radford  introduced  the father of an anorexia sufferer who sadly died as the condition took her life. He spoke about how families suffer alongside the victim and how the charity B-eat  is doing so much to help all those affected by disordered eating conditions. Andrew explained that  due to the generous support of Inner Wheel they were able to provide a free helpline 365 days of the year.

The second session saw  presentation's  by  Canine partners, Young Carers and Goalball. Canine Partners were presented with the service of Friendship collection.

Two visually impaired (VI)  athletes  from the UK women's team demonstrated how the game is played and how Goalball had allowed them to become part of an exciting team sport and how they hoped that with  support they may qualify for the 2020 Paralympics.

District 7 were yet again represnted in the golf Competition when  Jane Pigg from  St Neots won. Well done Jane.

The session ended with guest speaker John McCarthy, CBE who told of this harrowing ordeal as he was held hostage for 5 years  during  the Lebanon crisis.

The evening entertainment was from the Classic Buskers which was enjoyed by all.

Wednesday 5th April- The AGM during the morning session heard how IW Clubs in GB&I  £971,000  was recorded as given in the home Service reports and that £288,000 donated as reported in the International Service report.

The third and final session of the Conference began with guest spaker Lydia Slack who told of her "Awkward Years" living of a hill top farm in Derbyshire. Her hilarious tales  about her life growing up on the sheep farm had our sides aching.

We also heard how Zena felt comforted by a warm blanket of Inner Wheel friends when she was at her most low and  how how she dared to say that District Meetings were boring and how she set about trying to make changes with her Pink Elastic approach.

Liz Thomas the  incoming Association President said Zena would be a hard act to follow but was ready for the challenge.

The Conference finished with a performace from the Bevox  community choir who were joined by the District 7 Choir  for a final song " You'll never Walk alone" A very fitting end to a great Conference.

The fun continued as we danced the night away at Pryzm Nightclub.
